$0.00

Very detailed view of “MONTEREY in Californien” from Meyer’s Universum. Steel engraving with later hand-coloring. Published New York & Hildburghausen, c. 1848-52. Image size:  4 1/4 x 6 3/8''.

Monterey was explored in 1602 by Sebastián Vizcaíno, who named it in honor of the Count de Monte Rey, viceroy of Mexico. It became capital of Alta California in 1775, was fortified, and became a port of entry & center of Spanish culture. Under Mexico, Monterey remained the capital of a vast area including all of present-day California & the American Southwest. Commodore John Drake Sloat raised the American flag over the town’s presidio in 1846 during the Mexican War. The first constitutional convention in California met at Colton Hall in 1849. A very early and rare view of Monterey!
