One three-line illuminated initial in red and white with a floral interior on a gold ground; two two-line illuminated initials in liquid gold on red ground with gold penwork; three one-line illuminated initials in gold on red or blue ground.
Unusual vibrant and elaborate borders in colorful floral (including strawberries – symbol of perfect righteousness) and geometric motif in red, green, blue and white on gold ground. France: Rouen, (Use of Rouen) c. 1470-90.
Three-quarter miniature painting of The Adoration of the Magi (verso): The Virgin Mary is seated holding the unclothed Christ Child with a starry red textile hanging behind them. Both face a the oldest king, his cap removed to the ground in respect and arms extended presenting his gift to the Child whose arm are outstretched. Behind him are two kings wearing their crowns each with a gift in their right hand. Hilly green landscape is seen in background; star of Bethlehem radiating towards the Christ Child. The painting opens Hours of the Virgin – Hour of Sext.
Recto concludes The Hours of the Holy Spirit – Hour of Terce. The two-line illuminated “S” begins: “Suum…” (God His Holy Spirit sent to His Apostles dear, On the day of Pentecost to yield them gladsome cheer, And with fiery tongues in them did ardent zeal impress: By no means could He endure to leave them comfortless).
