"Texas" The Republic of Texas c 1842 - Arrowsmith/Flemming

$0.00

“TEXAS” John Arrowsmith. Glogau (Germany/ Poland): Carl Flemming, c. 1842.  Beautifully detailed German edition of the Arrowsmith map. (Ref: Day, Maps of Texas, #1457). Engraved map with original outline color. (Image: 15 ½ x 12 ½’’)

A handsome & very important historical map based entirely on the Arrowsmith map published in 1841. This new map of the Republic of Texas contains the most “up-to-date information” - including an accurate depiction of boundaries, river systems & the latest developments in political divisions.

Arrowsmith’s map was “probably the first to show the full extent of Texas’s claim to the region of the upper Rio Grande, an area included within Texas’s boundaries until the Compromise of 1850” (Martin & Martin Maps of Texas & the Southwest, p. 127).

Flemming includes the erroneous statement printed on the original Arrowsmith map regarding the western arid region of Texas: “this tract of Country explored by LeGrande in 1833 is naturally fertile, well wooded & with a fair proportion of water”. Also shown is an inset of Galveston Bay, with soundings - illustrating for the traveler the best route to the new city of Houston.

A fascinating, scarce and important 175 year old map of the Independent Republic of Texas!!  The map is in nice antiquarian condition with particularly bright original color, and some scattered spotting.
