"Palestinae sive Totius Promissionis..." Ortelius - c 1603 Holy

$0.00

“PALESTINAE SIVE TOTIUS TERRAE PROMISSIONIS...” Antwerp: Abraham Ortelius, c. 1603. Very fine engraved map with later hand-coloring. Verso text Latin. (Image : 13 3/8 x 17 ¾’’). Ref: van den Broecke "Ortelius Atlas Maps".

This superb map of “Palestine or the Entire Promised Land” is Ortelius’ third  plate of the Holy Land. It depicts the region from the Nile Delta to the Phoenician coast with a focus on the desert of the Exodus.

Based on the work of Tilleman Stella, it became “a prototype for the modern cartography of the Holy Land” (Nebenzahl Maps of the Holy Land, pp 85-86 – illustrated pl 30).   Stella adapted the coastline and Dead Sea from the configuration of Jacob Ziegler’s map of 1532, and Ortelius rounded the angular Dead Sea and the Gulf of Aquaba.

This map, with its rich hand-coloring, elegant lettering and elaborate title cartouches showing strapwork and neoclassical figures, plus ships at sea (one with cannons firing), depicts the Holy Land with a clearly Renaissance flavor. The upper cartouche contains Deuteronomy 8:7-9, God's promise of "a good land...of oil and honey...abundance of all things."

Published by Ortelius, from the “first modern atlas” Theatrum Orbis Terrarum - which contained some of the most beautiful engravings of the late sixteenth century! Ortelius attempted to use the most up-to-date information - making his maps cartographically important.

An excellent example of this sought-after map, with fine color - centerfold as issued.
