“BELGII NOVI ANGLIÆ NOVÆ ET PARTIS VIRGINIÆ.”  Joannes Jansonnius. Amsterdam: Pieter Schenk, and Gerald Valk, c. 1694; State 3 with the added dedication to Gualthero de Raet with his coat of arms and the imprint of Valk and Schenk. Beautifully engraved map with original hand-coloring, centerfold as issued. (Ref: Burden #305; Tooley (Amer) p. 284, pl #146).(Image: 17 ¼ x 20 ¼’’).

This important map is considered one of the fundamental landmark maps of America in the 17th century.  A result of several manuscript and printed sources, the map follows the general outline of Adriaen Block’s 1614 chart, showing the East Coast and interior from Chesapeake Bay in Virginia, through New Netherlands, New Belgium, New England and New France to Penobscot Bay (Maine).

It is the earliest collectible map to show the correct shapes of Manhattan and Long Island and the first to show the Swedish settlements in New Jersey on the Delaware River.

It was the first map to show many of the English settlements in the Northeast, particularly those along the Connecticut coast and into Long Island. Known Indian tribes are also noted throughout the map, and it is lavishly embellished with local game including a turkey, rabbit, beaver, & fox. Two large Indian Villages are shown on the left.

Provenance: From the Glen Mclaughlin Collection (PBA 2013), McLaughlin wrote “The Mapping of California as an Island”. His collection of 800 maps on the subject is at Stanford University.
