Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours on animal vellum. 17 lines of text, ruled in red, written on both sides in Latin with dark brown and red ink in gothic script  (Leaf size: 150 x 108mm – 5 7/8 x 4 ¼’’) 

One two-line illuminated initial in blue with delicate white penwork with an interior design in blue and white on a burnished gold ground and extending into the margin with an attractive rinceaux border of ivy leaves and blossoms in burnished gold and blue;  additionally, thirteen one-line illuminated initials in burnished gold on red and blue ground with white penwork.                          

Northern France, c. 1450-70.

The one-line illuminated “F” begins Psalm 24 (King James 25) 14-22: “Firmamentum…” (The Lord is a firmament to them that fear him: and his covenant shll be made manifest to them.  My eyes are ever towards the Lord: for he shall pluck my feet out of the snare.  Look thou upon me, and have mercy on me; for I am alone and poor.  The troubles of my heart are multiplied: deliver me from my necessities.  See my abjection and my labor; and forgive me all my sins.  Consider my enemies for they are multiplied, and have hated me with an unjust hatred.  Keep thou my soul, and deliver me: I shall not be ashamed, for I have hoped in thee.  The innocent and the upright have adhered to me: because I have waited on thee.  Deliver Israel, O God, from all his tribulations).  

The two-line illuminated “D” begins Psalm 26 (KJ 27) 1-2: “Dominus…” (The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the protector of my life: of whom shall I be afraid?...).
