This detailed historical map depicts California with its counties in contrasting colors.  Topographical features are shown (and described) with major towns, cities, water routes, mountain passes and “wagon roads” identified. Several of the counties noted on this map (notably San Bernadino and Tulare) would becom smaller in a few years as the population grew.

The insets depict “San Francisco Bay and Vicinity” and a “Map of the Settlements in the Great Salt Lake Country, Utah”  A fascinating view of the area as it existed during the Civil War Era.
