“HIBERNIÆ IRELAND Anglis…  William Hole. London:  William Camden, c. 1610.  Engraved map with old hand-coloring and beautiful watermark. (Image: 10 ½  x 13 1/8'')

One of the earliest obtainable maps of Ireland. This beautiful map was engraved by William Hole (one of the earliest English engravers) for the first illustrated edition of William Camden’s Britannia, originally published in 1607 with Latin text.  This example accompanied the English translation printed in 1610.   The English edition has no text on the back.

North is oriented to the right and based on Baptista Boazio’s scarce 1595 map. Counties are named and delineated with mountains, forests, waterways, cities and towns located.  The map is further enhanced with an elaborate title cartouche, beautiful compass rose, ships and sea monsters.
