Original leaf from An unusually large medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 34 lines of text, ruled in red, written in Latin with dark brown ink on animal vellum.(230 x 147mm – 9 x 5 ¾’’) 

Two illuminated two-line initials in white with white and brushed gold interior on red ground; numerous illuminated one-line initials and line extenders in brushed gold on blue, red or sepia ground.

Elaborately decorated side panel borders illuminated in colors & liquid gold with a floral design; panel paintings at the bottom are set between two columns. Recto scene is a countryside view with a rabbit (symbol of those who put the hope of their salvation in Christ and His Passion) nibbling a plant while a bird tries to nab a gray creature with orange wings from a fruit tree.

Verso depicts a boar hunt with two dogs confronting a wild boar – behind them, sitting on a fanciful creature, is another fanciful creature with a large protruding beak!

The two-line illuminated “D” begins Psalm 23 (King James 24) complete: “Domini…” (The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof: the world, and all they that dwell therein. For he hath founded it upon the seas; and hath prepared it upon the rivers…). 

The two-line illuminated “E” begins Psalm 44 (KJ 45) 1-13: “Eructavit…” (My heart hath uttered a good word: I speak my works to the king. My tongue is the pen of a scrivener that writeth swiftly. Thou art beautiful above the sons of men…).
