Printed by Gilles Hardouyn & hand-painted in the workshop of Germain Hardouyn - brother of the printer & a highly skilled illuminator. Paris (Use of Rome), c. 1518.
Noted for its DECORATIVE BORDERS - the paneled surrounds are historiated (containing identifiable scenes or figures) or inhabited forms – including St. Barbara with her attributes of a tower in her left hand and the palm of martyrdom in her right).
The one-line illuminate “R” continues Psalm 101 (King James 102): 19-29: “Scribantur…” (Let these things be written unto another generation: and the people that shall be created shall praise the Lord…).
The two-line illuminated “D” begins Psalm 129 (KJ 130) complete: “De profundis…” (Out of the depths I have cried to thee, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice…).
The next two-line illuminated “D” begins Psalm 142 (KJ 143) 1-12: “Domine…” (Hear, O Lord, my prayer: give ear to my supplication in thy truth: hear me in thy justice…).
