Original leaf from a printed & hand-illuminated Book of Hours.  Twenty-eight lines of ruled Latin text, printed in red & black on animal vellum. (178 x 115mm – 7 x 4 ½’’) 

Four illuminated two-line initials & four illuminated one-line initials in gold alternating on a red-orange or deep blue ground.  Three multi-line miniature paintings of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Printed by Gilles Hardouyn & hand-painted in the workshop of Germain Hardouyn - brother of the printer & a highly skilled illuminator.  Paris (Use of Rome), c. 1518.

Noted for its DECORATIVE BORDERS - the paneled surrounds are historiated (containing identifiable scenes or figures) or inhabited forms.

This leaf is from an uncommon section in a Book of Hours – the Suffrage of the Holy Trinity. The thirteen-line miniature painting depicts God the Father in clouds with his right arm outstretched & an open book in his left hand. Text next to the miniature begins: “Domine sancta pater…” (Holy Lord, Almighty Father, eternal God…).

The eleven-line miniature painting depicts God the Son showing Jesus Christ carrying a cross with his mother & John the Evangelist  following on his right side. Text next to the miniature begins: “Domine iesu christe…”  (O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God…). 

The eight-line miniature painting depicts God the Holy Spirit with a scene of the Pentecost. The Virgin Mary is depicted hands clasped in prayer with an open book on her lap and surrounded by Apostles.  The Holy Spirit is represented as golden rays emanating from heaven above.  The text next to the miniature begins: “Domine spiritus sancta deus…” (O Lord, Holy Spirit, one with God the Father and God the Son…).
