$495.00

“SCANDINAVIA complectens SUECIÆ DANIÆ & NORVEGIÆ REGNA...” Nuremberg: Johann Baptist Homann, c. 1710-20. Fine engraved map with original hand-coloring. (Image: 18 3/4 X 21 3/4’’). Four small filled wormholes and lower centerfold reinforced.

This handsome historical map depicts Scandinavia - or the Kingdoms of Sweden, Denmark and Norway  (present day Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland,  and part of NW Russia).  The Baltic States of Latvia Lithuania& Estonia are also shown.

Topographical features are very well defined with most major towns, cities, roads, bridges, forests, castles and water routes identified. The title cartouche enriches the map with angels and allegorical figures supporting a title curtain, and a medallion above that with a French title: Les Trois  Covronnes du Nord.

Homann produced maps that were exceptional for their clarity and comprehensiveness. “The founder of the dominant dynasty of German 18th century cartographers...He was one of the first to color his maps at origin...”(Portinaro & Knirsch, The Cartography of North America, p. 315).
