Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 15 lines of red-ruled Latin text, in dark brown ink, on animal vellum. (197 x 138 mm - 7.9 x 5.5") 

 Four two-line illuminated initials alternating in red and blue with delicate white penwork & an interior floral design in red, orange and blue on a burnished gold ground and extending into the margin in a delicate rinceaux design; two one-line illuminated initials & two illuminated line-extenders in burnished gold on red & blue ground with delicate white penwork.  

The text is surrounded on 3 sides with an elegant rinceaux panel border in a delicate floral motif with ivy leaves in red, blue, green, orange & burnished gold; an illuminated bar extends beyond the length of the text in red, blue & burnished gold.

The two-line illuminated ''D'' begins ''Deus qui...'' (O God, Who taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that, by the gift of the same Spirit, we may be always truly wise, and ever rejoice in His consolation).

The next two-line illuminated ''D'' begins: ''Deus qui salutis...'' (O God, Who by the fruitful virginity of blessed Mary, hast given unto mankind the rewards of eternal salvation: grant, we beseech thee, that we may experience her intercession for us, by whom we deserved to receive the Author of life, our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son).

The two-line illuminated ''E'' begins ''Ecclesiasm tuam...'' (Make Thy church shine, we ask, O kindly Lord, so that illuminated by the teachings of blessed John Thy apostle and evangelist it may reach Thy eternal gifts. Through our Lord).
