Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 17 lines of text, ruled in red, written in Latin with dark brown and red ink in gothic script on animal vellum. (106 x 82mm – 4 3/16 x 3 ¼’’) 

Three two-line illuminated initials in burnished gold on a red and blue ground with delicate white penwork extending into the margins with delicate burnished gold leaves.                        

Northern France or French Flanders, c. 1450-70.

The two-line illuminated “P” begins the prayer:  “Protector noster…” (O God, the Protector of all that trust in Thee, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy, increase and multiply upon us Thy mercy that, Thou being our Ruler and Guide, we may so pass through things temporal that we finally lose not the things eternal).

The two-line illuminated “D” begins:  “Deus qui…” (O God, who hast commanded us to honor our father and mother: in Thy mercy have pity on their souls and forgive them their and make me to see them again in the joy of everlasting brightness). 

The two-line illuminated “F” begins:  “Fidelium…” (O God, the Creator and redeemer of all the faithful, grant to the souls of Thy departed servants the remission of all their sins; that through pious supplications they may obtain the pardon they have always desired…).
