Original leaf from a printed & hand-illuminated Book of Hours. Ruled Latin text (French beneath side panels) printed in black on animal vellum. (168x105mm).

Initials & line-endings illuminated by hand in gold, blue and/or red. Noted for its DECORATIVE BORDERS - the paneled surrounds are historiated or inhabited forms - executed by Philippe Pigouchet.                           

Published by Simon Vostre in Paris (Use of Rouen) c. 1506.

Charity, Justice, Prudence and Temperance are four of the Seven Virtues in the side panels.

Interior panels depict Michael the Archangel, John the Baptist & John the Evangelist. At Michael the Archangel begins:  ''De sancto...'' (Of Saint Michael the Archangel.  O Archangel Michael, commander of paradise, come to the aid of the people of God: and be thou willing to defend us from a hostile power and to led us with thee into the company of God...O God who after a marvelous order didst dispose the ministries of angels and of men: grant in thy mercy that our life may be defended on earth by them who stand forever before thee & minister unto thee in heaven...). 

At John the Baptist:  ''Inter...'' (Among those born of woman none arose greater than John the Baptist.  He was a man sent by God...Show thyself, we pray, O omnipotent God, so that thy household may go by the way of salvation...).  At John the Evangelist:  "Ioannes..." (John the Apostle & Evangelist, a virgin, was chosen by the Lord & more beloved than the others...Make thy church shine, we ask, O kingly Lord, so that illuminated by the teachings of blessed John thy apostle and evangelist it may reach thy eternal gifts...).
