Original Etching - The Boat of Caron (Charon) - Feyen-Perrin

$0.00

ARTIST:  Francois N. S. Feyen-Perrin (1826-88)

TITLE:  LA BARQUE DE CARON (The Boat of Caron/Charon)

DATE:  1864  (Society of Aqua Fortistes, Vol. 2)

A very fine original etching by Feyen-Perrin, a member of the French “rustic school” which included Breton, Millet and Rousseau.  Feyen-Perin was schooled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and under the tutelage of Cogniet and d’Yvon.  Exhibited at the Salon of Paris 1848-82 where his work received much public acclaim.

This etching shows clearly Feyen-Perrin’s masterful use of cross-hatching, burr and retroussage. Charon comes from Greek mythology, the son of Erebus and Nyx (Night), whose duty it was to ferry over the Rivers Styx and Acheron those souls of the deceased who had received the rites of burial.
