A very fine original engraving by C. Cousen after the painting by Edward William Cooke.  It depicts the H.M.S. Scylla arriving at Venice carrying Otho I, the former King of Greece after his abdication.

Edward William Cooke (1811-80) was a prodigious and precocious talent who engraved botanical illustrations for Loudon’s Encyclopedia of Plants  at age 9. He is heralded as a painter and etcher of marine subjects. After studying with Clarkson Stanfield and A.C. Pugin, Cooke produced his best known series of etchings of shipping and coastal scenery from 1828-33.
