Thomas Moran (1837-1926) American painter, illustrator and etcher - one of the most important artists to capture the Western landscape. In 1871 he accompanied Dr. Hayden on a surveying expedition to Yellowstone; in 1872 he painted Yosemite; 1873 the Grand Canyon of the Colorado and regions in Utah; 1874 Colorado. His landscapes are breathtaking glimpses into what was an unfolding western frontier. (Ref: Samuels’ Encyclopedia of Artists of the American West, p.333-4).
Mary Nimmo Moran (1842-89) was the pupil of her husband, Thomas. She achieved an international reputation as one of the best American etchers. (Tyler: American Etchings of the 19th century).
