TITLE:  Harvest at San Juan, New Mexico

DATE:  1883

Published: NYC,  in "Original Etchings by American Artists"

A crisp original etching by Peter Moran - signed “PM” in the plate. Moran (1841-1914) was an important American landscape and animal artist.  He began sketching in New Mexico as early as 1880 (though some evidence suggests he toured the area as early as 1864) “because he was attracted by the land and people”.  Moran accompanied Capt. Bourke on the ethnographic trip to Indian pueblos in New Mexico and Arizona in 1881; in 1890 he was a special agent for the US government Indian Census. “…for New Mexico, Peter Moran , in almost one hundred drawings, watercolors, paintings, and etchings in public collections, has left us a far greater legacy than Thomas Moran” (Imprint).
