Original leaf from a manuscript Italian Antiphonal on animal parchment.  (485 x 377mm – 19 1/8x 14 7/8’’) 

The manuscript text and music (seven lines of music on a four-line stave) were beautifully executed by hand over 600 years ago in the 14th century!!!  Some text and musical notation worn from devotional use.

One exceptional illuminated initial (175 x 120mm – 7 x 4 5/8’’) in red and blue with an elaborate internal geometric "puzzle design" (in the Moorish influenced Mudejar style) in intricate red and blue penwork and extending beyond the initial into the margin; one illuminated initial in red surrounded by intricate blue penwork.

The elaborate illuminated “L” begins: “Laetetur cor…” (Let the heart that seek the Lord rejoice…).

Antiphonals contain chants for the canonical hours of Divine Office: first vespers or the vigil of great feasts, matins, lauds, prime, terce, sext, none, vespers & compline.
