Original leaf from a printed & hand-illuminated Book of Hours.  Twenty-eight lines of ruled Latin text, printed in black on animal vellum. (178 x 115mm – 7 x 4 ½’’) 

Four illuminated two-line initials & three illuminated one-line initials in gold alternating on a red-orange or deep blue ground.  Four nine-line miniature paintings of Saints Anthony, Anne, Mary Magdalene, and Katherine.

Printed by Gilles Hardouyn & hand-painted in the workshop of Germain Hardouyn - brother of the printer & a highly skilled illuminator.  Paris (Use of Rome), c. 1518.

Noted for its DECORATIVE BORDERS - the paneled surrounds are historiated (containing identifiable scenes or figures) or inhabited forms.

This leaf is from the section of Suffrages - prayers to saints who were considered the protectors, helpers and guardians of medieval people.  

The miniature painting of St. Anthony depicts him as an abbot with right hand supporting an open book & his attribute, a pig, at this lower right; gray building in background. Text reads: “Anthoni…” (Renowned shepherd Anthony, who restoreth the crucified…).

The miniature painting of St. Anne depicts her teaching the Virgin Mary to read.  Text reads: “Celeste…” A heavenly blessing entered into Anne, through whom the Virgin Mary was born for us…).

The miniature painting of St. Mary Magdalene  depicts her with ointment jar in left hand.  Text reads: “Maria…” (Therefore Mary poured oil on the feet of Jesus…).

The miniature painting of St. Katherine depicts her right hand supporting a book and her left a sword.  Text reads: “Virgo…” (The virgin St. Katherine, jewel of Greece, was the daughter of King Costus in the city of Alexandria…)
