Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 16 lines of ruled text, ruled in red, written in Latin with dark brown ink in gothic script on animal vellum. (162x125mm – 6 3/8 x 5’’) 

One illuminated two-line initial and ten illuminated one-line initials in burnished gold on a red and blue ground with delicate white penwork. The panel borders (both sides) contain a highly decorative floral design with flowers, berries and acanthus leaves in blue, red, green, pink, burnished and brushed gold.                                          

Northern France (Paris), c. 1460.

The one-line illuminated “D” begins Psalm 142 (King James 143) 1-10: “Domine exaudi…” (Hear, O Lord, my prayer: give ear to my supplication in thy truth: hear me in thy justice.  And enter not into judgement with thy servant: for in thy sight no man living shall be justified. …Cause me to hear they mercy in the morning; for in thee have I hoped. Make the way know to me, wherein I should walk: for I have lifted up my soul to thee.  Deliver me from my enemies, O Lord, to thee have I fled: Teach me to do thy will, for thou art my God).
