[SOUTH CAROLINA] New York & Chicago: Rand, McNally & Co., 1898. Color-printed map with original color. With center-fold as issued. (Image: 19 x 26''’)

This map depicts South Carolina in great detail. Rail routes are identified and are shown throughout the state with each stop noted. Topographical features are shown and major land routes, water routes, mountains, islands, cities and towns are identified.

Counties are named and in contrasting color - including the newly formed counties of Dorchester, Bamberg, Cherokee & Greenwood (all in 1897), and prior to the creation of Dillon (1910), Calhoun (1908), Jasper (1912), McCormick (1916) and Allendale (1919) counties.

“Rand, McNally & Co. specialized in filling the great demand for maps & guidebooks occasioned by the westward expansion of the U. S. in the 2nd half of the 19th century... Their maps were constantly updated with new information & thus serve as an eloquent witness to the westward march of railroads, settlements, & counties as the frontier disappeared.” (Crossroads of Empire: Early Printed Maps of Texas & the Southwest, p.53).
