Engraved frontispiece from an Italian version of De L’Isle's atlas published by Girolamo Albrizzi. The architectural framework is flanked by male and female Roman soldiers. 

At the top a pair of putti hold support a red velvet drape. Within the large shield at the bottom is a vignette of the city of Venice (St. Mark’s Square), where the atlas was published. The large shield at the top contains the symbol for the Jesuit Society of Jesus. 

“An integral part of map collecting is the study of frontispieces and title pages of atlases.  They are usually very elaborate affairs, engraved by the finest craftsmen available, not only announcing the title of the volume, but enticing the viewer to look further into the pages...” (R.
