SPANISH DOMINIONS IN NORTH AMERICA NORTHERN PARTLondon: John Pinkerton, c. 1811. Engraved map with original outline color. (Ref:  Phillips #724). (Image: 20 x 27 ¾’’)  Part of centerfold strengthened with archival tape.

This very important historical and decorative map was published just 8 years after the Louisiana Purchase. It depicts the region which is today Louisiana, Arkansas, part of Missouri (including what would become Kansas City), Kansas, part of Colorado (to include where Denver is today), part of Utah and Nevada, Southern California (including the area of present day Los Angeles), Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Mexico.

The region of present-day Texas notes the “Pres. De Bejar – the capital of the Province of Texas” & “Settlement of Mr. Salle in 1683”.  Nice early detail in Texas, in the decade prior to the arrival of Austin, including early roads, west of Galveston!

It is far rarer and much more detailed than Thomson's similar map of the region. Sources for the map include both the Pike and Humboldt explorations.

Topographical features are exceptionally well detailed with most towns, settlements and missions located. A large number of Indian Tribes are also identified. In addition to geographical interest, this map by Pinkerton is noted for excellence and clarity of engraving, and close attention to detail.
