"Illinois" c 1824 - Finley - with Indian lands

$0.00

''ILLINOIS'' Philadelphia:  Anthony Finley, c. 1824, from the first edition, first issue of  Finley’s  A New General Atlas.  Very fine map engraved by Young & Delleker, with full original hand-coloring. (Image: 11 1/4 x 8 1/2'')

This handsome historical map depicts Illinois with its counties named and in contrasting colors. Topographical features are depicted with major cities, towns, and waterways identified. Major wagon roads are also shown.

Finley's map of Illinois is particularly interesting and important due to the portrayal of the rapidly changing American Indian situation in the northern region.

In 1824 when this map was published, northern Illinois was a confined territory assigned to the Sac and Fox, Winnebago and Ottowa (sic) Indians - with access provided to Lake Michigan by a strip of land between the Winnebago and Ottawa tribes. Within a few years of this map’s publication, most Illinois Indian tribes were forcibly removed to Indian Territory and additional counties were added for settlement.
