 Single leaf from a manuscript Missal. Written in Latin on hand-made paper.  The manuscript text and music (on a red four-line stave) were executed by hand, in black ink, with headings, rubrics and rulings in red. (144x85mm – 5 5/8 x 3 3/8’’)

France, c. 1700.

This leaf is from the Feasts for July. The red “V” begins John 20:18: “Venuit Maria Magdalene…” (Mary Magdalene cometh, and telleth the disciples: I have seen the Lord).

The red “Q” begins Matthew 10:32: “Qui confitebitur…” (Everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my father who is in heaven). 

Missals contain the texts necessary for the performance of the Mass (including chants, prayers and readings) together with ceremonial directions.
