 Single leaf from a manuscript Missal. Written in Latin on hand-made paper.  The manuscript text and music (on a red four-line stave) were executed by hand, in black ink, with headings, rubrics and rulings in red.   (144x85mm – 5 5/8 x 3 3/8’’)

France, c. 1700.

This leaf is from the Feasts for July. The red “V” begins: “Vocavit…” (Going up into the mountain, Jesus called to him James of the Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and gave them the name Boanerges, that is, the sons of thunder).

The red “M” begins Acts 12: 1-2: “Misit Herodes…” (And at the same time, Herod the king stretched forth his hands, to afflict some of the church. And he killed James, the brother of John, with the sword).

The red “E” begins: “Ego Dominus…” (I am the Lord who appeared to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob: I have remembered by covenant). 

Missals contain the texts necessary for the performance of the Mass (including chants, prayers and readings) together with ceremonial directions
