Original leaf from a medieval manuscript folio Bible with illuminations from the Johannes Grusch WorkshopFormerly owned by the Royal Abbey of St. Genevieve in Paris.  Latin gothic script, hand-written in brown ink, on animal vellum. (290 x 193 mm - 11.6 x 7.7")

Rubricated chapter numbers, initials and marginalia in red and blue. 50 lines of text in double columns.  Condition remark: one hole in outer margin and one small hole lower right margin, 20mm below text, both plugged with vellum.       

France: Paris, c. 1247.

The large size of the page is unusual in 13th century Bible production! The book from which this leaf came was a very high-quality production, scribed in the Johannes Grusch Workshop in Paris. The calligraphy is excellent & the vellum is of the finest style.

This leaf contains the text from Genesis 2:1 – 4:23: “Igitur…” (So the heavens and the earth were finished…and he rested on the seventh day from all his work…And the Lord God had planted a paradise of pleasure from the beginning: wherein he placed man whom he had formed….the Lord God built the rib which he took from Adam into a woman: and brought her to Adam…she (Eve) took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave to her husband who did eat…And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and slew him…and the Lord set a mark upon Cain, that whosoever found him should not kill him…).
