“OKLAHOMA and INDIAN TERRITORIES” Chicago: George F. Cram, c. 1893. Color-printed map with original color.   (Image: 9 ¾ x 13’’)

This detailed map depicts Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory with the counties/Indian Nations in contrasting pastel colors.

The Five Civilized Tribes are boldly noted (Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Chickasaw and Choctaw).  Other tribes subsequently removed to the Indian Territory are also shown. Topographical features are well noted, with major towns, cities, land, railroads and water routes identified.

Of particular interest: the capital of Oklahoma Territory in 1893 was Guthrie. It was officially changed to Oklahoma City in 1911 after a controversial midnight move by citizens of Oklahoma City.

“The Indian Territory was never an organized territory, but was set aside as a home for the Five Civilized Tribes, who were removed to it in the period 1820-45…Lands were held in common and each tribe had its own government.” (Scribner’s: Dictionary of American History, p.109).
