Original leaf from a printed & hand-illuminated Book of Hours. Ruled Latin text (French beneath side panels) printed in black on animal vellum.(168x105mm).

Initials & line-endings illuminated by hand in gold, blue and/or red. Noted for its DECORATIVE BORDERS - the paneled surrounds are historiated or inhabited forms - executed by Philippe Pigouchet.                            

Published by Simon Vostre in Paris (Use of Rouen) c. 1506.

One side panel depicts deer hunting.

This leaf continues the Suffrages of the Saints.  Suffrages attest to the deep personal connection between saints and ordinary people. Interior panels depict Saints Lawrence (patron saint of cooks) and Christopher (patron saint of travelers).

At St. Lawrence begins:  ''De sancto laurentio...'' (Of Saint Lawrence.  The deacon Lawrence hath done a good work he who gave light to the blind through the sign of the cross.  He dispersed and gave to the poor. His justice remaineth forever...). 

At St. Christopher:  ''De sancto christoforo...'' (Saint Christopher, precious martyr, I beg thee by the name of Christ thy creator, and by that prerogative that he conferred upon thee when he put his name upon thee alone.  I pray thee in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit and by the grace which thou hast received that applying to Christ and his holy mother, thou be gracious to me thy servant, a sinner...).
