In the chart of the Northern Constellations (Boreale), the Ptolemaic constellations are shown as well as signs of the zodiac and eight new constellations by Hevelius.  The stars are laid out according to the ecliptic for the end of the year 1730. Depicted in the corners are the observatories of Brahe (on the island of Hven), Polish astronomer Hevelius (in Danzig), and astronomer Eimmart  (in Nuremberg) and Paris . The tables along the sides identify and describe the constellations on the chart.

In the chart of the Southern Constellations (Australe), the Ptolemaic constellations are shown (including Orion, Scorpio, Taurus, Eridanus and the Southern Cross) as well as signs of the zodiac.  “Sextans Uraniae” (lower left) was introduced by Hevelius in memory of the instrument with which he made his astronomical observations (known today as simply Sextans). Also included are a few unusual additions such as the Peacock, Toucan and a Unicorn (Monoceros). Depicted in the corners are the observatories of Greenwich, Copenhagen, Cassel and Berlin.   The tables along the sides identify and describe the constellations on the chart.

Johann Gabriel Doppelmayer  (1677-1750)was an astronomer and mathematician of high repute (professor of mathematics in Nuremberg). He and Homann were frequent collaborators in producing celestial and astronomical charts for atlases.
