Original copper-plate engraving from De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld. “The first encyclopedia of the Americas” (Schwartz & Ehrenberg, The Mapping of America, p.118).

This beautifully engraved map depicts present-day Panama, Colombia, part of northwestern Venezuela, the northern bit of Ecuador, and the southern edge of Costa Rica (including Cartago). It is based on the work of Hessel Gerritsz.  Topographical features are shown and villages, waterways , islands and mountains are located.

The elaborate title cartouche depicts natives with what may be an armadillo. The distance scale is ornamented with a natives and a goat. Ships and two compass roses adorn the seas.
