$0.00

“PARAQVARIA Vulgo PARAGVAY…” Amsterdam:  Arnoldus Montanus, 1671. Engraved map with later hand-coloring. (Image: 12  x 14 5/8'')

This highly detailed map depicts present-day Paraguay, Uruguay and parts of Argentina (noting present-day Cordoba), Chile (including Copiapo), Bolivia (including Potosi and Santa Cruz), Peru & Brazil (north to present-day Rio de Janeiro). It is based on Blaeu's rare map of the region.

Topographical features are shown with mountains, waterways, forests and settlements identified.  Buenos Aires (at the mouth of the Rio de la Plata) is named, but shown as just a small "X" on the map.

The elaborate title cartouche depicts natives in ceremonial costumes with weaponry and indigenous animals. In the upper right a descriptive chart is flanked by putti. Ships and a sea battles embellish the sea.
