“CALIFORNIA”  New York:  J. H. Colton, c. 1859.  Engraved map with original hand-coloring. (Image: 15 1/2 x 12 5/8'')

This attractive historical map depicts the newly admitted state of California (admitted 1850) with the counties named and in contrasting colors.  Topographical features are well noted.

The "explored route for Atlantic & Pacific R.R." (see Santa Barbara County) the "Practical Route for Atlantic & Pacific R.R." (see Shasta County) and "Fremont's Route 1845 (see Fresno & Tulare Counties) are located.

Of particular interest is the large inset showing the newly incorporated (1850) "City of San Francisco" - identifying the major streets, hills and squares of the city as they existed in the 1850's.
