$0.00

“ITALIA…” Nuremberg: Homann Heirs, c. 1742.  Beautifully engraved map with original hand-coloring - cartouche later hand-coloring. (Image: 19 ¼ x 22 ¼’’)

This handsome 18th century map depicts Italy, Sicily, Corsica and Sardinia as they appeared in the 1740’s.  Topographical features are very well defined.

Most major towns, cities, land and water routes, mountains and political boundaries are also identified.  The decorative title cartouche depicts religious figures and items as well as mythical (including a wonderful sea creature).

Homann produced maps that were exceptional for their clarity and comprehensiveness. “The founder of the dominant dynasty of German 18th century cartographers...He was one of the first to color his maps at origin...”(Portinaro & Knirsch The Cartography of North America, p. 315).
