Translated from the French, this book analyzes the role of the image in the history of writing, with detailed commentaries from a team of leading specialists.  Together they explain the evolution of more than 30 key scripts and alphabets and their numerous derivatives.  The scope of the material, along with the extensive documentation makes this an essential contribution to existing scholarship on this fascinating subject.  Illustrated throughout in color and black and white.

The first section is devoted to the oldest, non-alphabetic methods of writing; second section focuses on the history and dissemination of alphabets; the third and final section, examines the reincorporation of imagery into the Western alphabet.

Anne-Marie Christin taught at the Universite de Paris VII, where she founded the Center for the Study of Writing.  She has edited numerous volumes on writing.
