“JOHNSON'S NEW MAP of the State of TEXAS” New York: Johnson & Ward, c.1865. Lithographed map with original hand-coloring. (Ref: Goss, #84). (Image: 16 ½ x 24 ½”)
This historical and decorative map depicts Texas, as it existed during the Civil War. The route of the San Antonio-El Paso Mail Line (in service until 1861) is delineated (via Ft. Clark/Ft. Lancaster/Ft. Davis). Also depicted is the route of the Butterfield Overland Mail Route (in service 1858-61) from Ft. Bliss to Gainesville/Sherman.
Topographical features are shown with major towns, cities, water routes and other land routes identified. Counties appear as they existed in the 1860’s (very little was settled beyond longitude 100 - Bexar county westward). Insets are provided showing the “Plan of Galveston Bay” and “Plan of Sabine Lake.” The Houston & Guaymas Railroad is also shown.
