Roman Bronze Fibula c. 1st - 2nd century AD

$0.00

Bronze Fibula: Roman

Circa 1st – 2nd Century AD

(70 mm in Length – 2 ¾”)

This fibula (clasp for fastening garments – such as togas) is intact, with a dark green patina. The two piece construction is similar to, but more elaborate than the “Colchester” (Roman Britain) fibula.

A similar example is in the Metropolitan Museum: “Mirror of the Medieval World,” page 21.

The fibula was in widespread use throughout the ancient world. The Roman conquests spread the use of the fibula, which became the basis for more complicated brooches. In the severe climate of northern Europe, it routinely functioned as a fastening for a heavy cloak or tunic. The safety-pin type of fibula continued to be used up into the Middle Ages, serving both as functional and decorative elements.
