Bronze Fibula: Roman Amphora Brooch

Circa 2nd – 3rd Century AD (35 mm in Length – 1 3/8”)

An exceptionally fine Ancient Roman bronze skeuomorphic brooch depicting an amphora in an elaborate framework. The condition of this rare brooch is remarkable: it has a fine dark glossy patina and the pin is intact.  Even the incised ribs on the vase are still visible

The fibula was in widespread use throughout the ancient world. The Roman conquests spread the use of the fibula, which became the basis for more complicated brooches. In the severe climate of northern Europe, it routinely functioned as a fastening for a heavy cloak or tunic. For two other vase form brooches see Hattatt “Ancient Brooches,” pg. 358
