Original leaf from a manuscript Spanish Antiphonal on animal parchment.  The manuscript text and music (six lines of music on a five-line stave) were beautifully executed by hand over 400 years ago!!! (495 x 365mm – 19 1/2 x 14 3/8’’).  Upper right margin reinforced with old tape.

Spain, c. 1550-1600 –this Choirbook once belonged to the Church of San Miguel, Pinã de Campos in Palencia, and was likely scribed there.

One exceptional knot-work (cadel) initial.

This leaf continues Psalm 44 (King James 45) 5:  "[pul]chritudine...'' (With thy comeliness and thy beauty set out, proceed prosperously, and reign). 

The knot-work ''P'' continues verse 5:  ''Propter..." (Because of truth and meekness and justice: and thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully).

Antiphonals contain chants for the canonical hours of the Divine Office: first vespers or the vigil of great feasts, matins, lauds, prime, terce, sext, none, vespers and compline.
