ARTIST: Lucien Gautier (b. 1850)
TITLE: LA NOUVELLE CATHEDRALE DE MARSEILLE
DATE: c. 1868 (L’Art)
An original etching on “Arches” laid paper. Gautier was noted for his fine etchings of landscapes and city views throughout Europe – wining numerous medals. This etching shows the new Marseilles cathedral under construction. In the Place de la Major, the old cathedral of la Major, built on the ruins of a temple of Diana and dating from the 11th century, was partially dismantled to make way for the eight-domed structure that in 1852 replaced it as the city’s cathedral. The dome and supporting arches of the old cathedral are fine examples of Provencal Romanesque stonemasonry.
