An original American etching on cream paper. Published in Sylvester R. Koehler, Original Etchings by American Artists (Cassell and Company, 1883). Signed and dated in the plate: K. van Elten 1883.
Van Elten was born in the Netherlands, studied in Haarlem and began a successful career as a painter and etcher. When he was 36 he immigrated to the United States. Van Elten participated in two of the great American exhibitions of the late nineteenth century – the 1876 Universal Exhibition in Philadelphia and the 1893 Colombian Exposition in Chicago. He was a member of the Royal Academies in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the American Society of Painters in Water Colors, The New York Etching Club and an associate of the National Academy of Design.
