Smillie (1833-1909) was a painter of mountain landscapes, illustrator and important engraver.  Many of his drawings were used for Picturesque America.  From a family of artists (son of James Smillie & older brother of George H. Smillie).  “He specialized in landscapes of the American mountain ranges, the Rockies, Sierras, Adirondacks, White and Catskills” (Samuels’ Encyclopedia of Artists of the American West, p. 447).
