This view depicts the capital city situated on the west bank of the Connecticut River. The large building with the cupola is the State Capitol, erected 1792-96. “Hartford was permanently settled in 1635, by an English colony from Massachusetts.  Its name was given in honor of one of the leading settlers, Mr. Stone, who was born in Hartford, England......” (New and Complete Gazetteer of the United States...1854).
