(Image: 21 x 27’’)  “MAP OF THE UNITED STATES of AMERICA SHOWING THE RAILROADS”  New York: J. Calvin Smith., c. 1855 (dated in lower margin).

Engraved map with original hand-coloring. Engraved by C. Copley. Issued folded in Harper’s Statistical Gazetteer of the World. Right margin extended to facilitate matting. (Ref: Phillips, A List of Maps of America, p. 905).

This very detailed map depicts the United States in 1855 with railroads identified throughout! The inset at upper right show the extent of the commecially important Erie Canal from Albany to Buffalo. Indian Tribes are well located in the western region.

The New State of Wisconsin (admitted as a State in 1848) is shown, but Minnesota Territory (established in 1849) includes much of the present-day Dakotas.  The Nebraska Territory as shown here would change a great deal - finally becoming part of Wyoming, part of the Dakotas, Montana and Nebraska.

The inset at lower right shows California, Oregon and the western Territories. Washington & Oregon Territories include present-day Idaho.  Utah Territory (statehood 1896) includes present-day Nevada & part of Colorado. New Mexico Territory (statehood 1912) extends from Texas to California. The Indian Territory is noted as Western Territory.  A very unusual view of the United States during a period of rapid change!

Shipped unmatted.
