c 1847 "Map of New Hampshire & Vermont" - Mitchell

$175.00

“MAP OF NEW HAMPSHIRE & VERMONT…” Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, c. 1847 (dated in the map) from Mitchell’s New Universal Atlas.   Engraved map with original hand coloring. (Image: 15 x 12’’). An especially nice example of this scarce map - very clean with bright original color !

This map depicts the states with their counties named and in contrasting colors. Topographical features shown with many mountains named.  Major towns and cities are located, and stage, rail and canal routes are identified.

“Iron Factories” in Grafton County, NH, “Grant to Dartmouth College” in Coos Count, NH and a lake “drained in 1810” in Orleans, County Vermont are all noted. The insets at the right, list the Counties with their population (as of 1840), and chart the changes in population from 1701 to 1840.  An excellent view of the states as they existed prior to the Civil War!
