$475.00

“AMERICA” Petrus Bertius. Amsterdam: Jodocus Hondius, Jr., c. 1616 from Tabularum Geographicarum Contractarum.  Very fine original engraved map.  Verso: Latin. Reference:  Burden # 183. (Paper 112 x 190mm – 4 3/8 x 7 ½’’  Image:  95 x 135mm – 3 5/8 x 5 ¼’’)

On this map Jodicus Hondius Jr "for the first time on a continental map incorporated the recent discovery of Hudson Bay (Burden, pg.223). Topographical features are shown (many purely speculative, or mythical), and many known towns, cities, missions, & Indian villages are located. California is shown as a peninsula.

The northwest coast is shown oriented westward and then veering northeast - suggesting a Northwest Passage (also why the Hudson Bay is left open).  A wonderful sea monster is found off the southeast coast of South America.

“Petrus Bertius (1565-1629) was brother-in-law to both Jodocus Hondius and Peter van den Keere with whom he worked in close contact...” (Tooley: The Mapping of America, p. 299).

Handsome map with considerable detail, excellent condition.
