$0.00

“A NEW MAP OF THE WORLD on the Globular Projection” Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, c. 1847, dated in the lower cartouche.  Engraved map with original hand-coloring. (Image: 9 ½ x 14 ¼’’)

This very handsome map depicts the Western and Eastern Hemispheres with the continents in contrasting colors. Countries, major cities, deserts, islands and waterways are identified, and many exploratory routes are shown.

Numerous exploratory routes are shown (including those of Captains Cook and Gore).

An additional note provided by the Sandwich Islands reads: “Owhyhee, here Capt. Cook was killed by the natives 1779”.  Antarctica is only partially delineated with a note  in the region stating “Many islands and firm fields of Ice”. A very attractive view of the world as it was known in the mid-19th century.
