1598 first edition (not the more common later 1713 version with additional T.2.pag.284” above the Eastern Hemisphere)

Sheet Size:  244 x 330mm – 9.5 x 13 inches

Map Image Size: 195 x 258mm – 7 5/8 x 10 1/8 inches

This scarce map is based on Rumold Mercator's map of 1587 with parallel latitudinals added. The projection of North America is similar to the Zaltieri/Lafreri maps of North America, with an exaggerated projection of NW Coast of America.  Although California is depicted as a peninsula, there are no Great Lakes.

The Northwest Passage is clearly shown and a very large Terra Australis extends along the bottom.  Florida barely extends from the continent.

This map predates the explorations of Le Maire & Schouten, which rounded Cape Horn proving open water south of Tierra del Fuego and the Straits of Magellan.

A very fine 16th century double hemispheric map in excellent condition, with rich dark impression.
